Segal Design Institute

As part of the Engineering First program, Engineering Design and Communication (EDC) is a two-quarter cross-disciplinary sequence of courses for first-year engineering students.

Developed and co-taught by faculty from the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science and Writing Program faculty from the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, this innovative course introduces students to engineering design and engineering writing as parallel, inter-related processes. Students receive credit for both engineering and writing as they work in teams to solve real problems and write reports for real clients. Designing solutions for everything from window latches to wheelchairs, students experience creative problem-solving in design and writing in an authentic setting that maximizes learning in both areas.
